Memory project

Max. no. of participants: 30

Duration: 90 mins.

Location: Jewish Museum

Methods: biography research, drawing portraits, presentations

In this workshop students make portraits based on photographs using charcoal and black and white pastels while exploring biographies of prewar Jewish residents of Oświęcim.

Memory Project was inspired by the story of Kalman and Anna, Jewish children who escaped from the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II. Soon after, Kalman disappeared without a trace.

Anna recounts their story as her daughter, Roz, paints his portrait. The act of painting and sharing his story transforms Kalman’s image into a universal expression of love and loss in a ten-minute video that we use to launch each session of the workshop.
