For several hundred years Krakow was one of the most important cities for Polish Jews. It was the place where the most prominent Jewish scholars lived and where the Ashkenazi identity of the Jews of Central and Eastern Europe was formed.Poles generally know a lot about the non-Jews living in Cracow and know the non-Jewish legend connected with the city; little (or nothing at all) is known about the Jews living here and they do not know the local Jewish legends. The author would like this book to contribute, even if only to a small extent, to regaining the identity of Jewish Cracow.
